max insurance grp around 15

currently have a civic coupe vti

was thinking:
eg civic hatch vti
calibra
mk3 golf gti
corrado 1.8 16v
ford probe(i know they're gash, but can get leather and air con, 2.0 16v for this money)

not sure about anything older like 205gti or r5 gtt

what would you have out of that, or anyone got any other suggestions?

Mk3 GTI??? Don't be daft.

MK2 Golf GTI 16V all the way.

Probe is insurance group 17.If you go for the corrado get the 2L 16V.

want to pay off some debts, so the ek has to go.

badly want an s14a, but no chance at the mo. could get an s13, but would cost a mint to run and keep going. like a g60 i suspect.

mainly between eg vti and calibra at the mo, but just collecting a few oppinions.

What about a 4th Gen Prelude (93-96 shape)

These look class, and go like stink! - the VTEC's are group 17 insurance, thou when I had mine it was miles cheaper to insure than my Golf GTi (8 valve!?)
You can pick up a pretty decent VTEC one for a couple grand, i you go for a 2.0 or 2.3 the insurance wont be as bad..

If i were me id get on the Phone and ask Tesco's how much to insure an imported 2.2 VTEC - at 19 it was only costing me £780!!

Thats for 197bhp, 0-60 in 6.5 seconds and 140 mph..

If you do decide to get one, get a BB4 chassis code, (jap import) these are 2ws, no airbags/abs etc. - miles lighter than UK spec (which by the way is only 185bhp but manages 0-60 in 6.6 seconds)
I did a few little bits and pieces to my Prelude, (VAFC, Cold air intake, and exhaust) and managed 214bhp on the rollers!

Timed with an APEXI RSM I managed 0-60 in 6.2 on 17's 1/4mile in 14.7

Even the BB4's get Climate control/aircon and electric folding mirrors.

I had mine 2 yrs and all it cost me was £21 for a new bush for MOT time.
In those 2 yrs I did 30k miles, sold it for £200 more than I paid for it

(PS the birds love them)

By the way the VTEC changover is much more noticiable (power and noise) in the Prelude than in the Civic..

The Prelude is similar in straightline performance to the Integra.

if you can get a prelude id go for one of them - i looked at them before the golf

u'll be lucky to get a decent corrado for that money, plus if you dink it the body panel prices are HUGE, plus the 1.8 16v's arent as fast as the mk2 16v's, longer ratio gearbox

wouldnt waste your time on a mk3 gti either

you can get a late mk2 16v for about 1600, but they aint to everybodies taste

civic vti will be another hard push to find for under 2k

suppose also, it depends on you want something with no frills, that just goes like stink, or you want something with the creature comforts like aircon etc

Should be able to get a civic vti for 2k easily, may be high miles but as i say if it's got history (serviced regularly etc) should be pretty reliable.

Having driven Civic VTi's, ATR's and owning a Prelude and ITR, I can tell you that the H22a changover is more noticable than the b16's..

More torque, and more noise.

What did you keep up with a prelude in?

There are several different Prelude models:

UK 2.0 - 140ish bhp - not very quick
UK 2.3 - 160bhp 0-60 in bout 7.5 1/4 in 15.7
UK 2.2 VTEC 183bhp 0-60 in 6.6 1/4 in 15.2
JDM 2.2si 158bhp similar to UK 2.3

JDM VTEC Si 197bhp - 0-60 in 6.4 1/4 in 14.8-15.0
