Righty, I've got a JL 500/1 which at the moment is turned quite a way down to allow the subs to bed in a bit. Now, when it comes to cranking the amp up, whats the best recommendation?
In the past I've always followed the following sorta steps:
Reset head unit (flat EQ basically)
Turn head unit 75% up
Adjust gain on amp until subs just begin to reach distortion, then turn gain back a touch.
Would that still be the right way to go about it?
There's a decent bit of info available from JL themselves...
http://www.jlaudio.com/amps/5001.html
http://www.jlaudio.com/amps/pdfs/500_1.pdf
http://www.jlaudio.com/amps/pdfs/500_1_MAN.pdf
Just wondering if anyone else had any bright ideas...

Diggidy put it up on here the other day you fool, and you replied about it going in FAQ's!!
And what about the RE(s)??

I read that, and I put it in the the tutorials section
I just didn't know if there was any other approachs I could take, that was all
As for the RE kit, kinda had to scale back my ideas a touch. Got too much to pay out for to go as mad as I would have liked. Still, I'm halfway to a very plesent sounding SQ-based setup, and I can't wait to get the front end sorted

Hmmn, I must admit I don't know many oscilliscope-owning friends
You think it's worth the effort of tracking one down though?

He followed that, but obviously people with a good ear or knack for it would be able to do it without one

It's been a week so far with quite a bit of usage (in the car for a fair amount of the day cause of work) and I'm going to leave it another week yet.

mate if you've caned it already, you obviously havent taken my advice, and there isnt a point now as you've probably unstiffened the rubber stupidly.
You could have had a much better sounding and performing sub if you listened.

That sounds like an Alpine h/u?
Hmmn, they might not distort yet - but it wont do the coils any good getting that much of a battering this early.
Mine is set to Sub at +6, flat EQ and no higher than 19 on the volume.

no, i didnt get the reading i wanted cos you REALLY have to drive these subs to get the performance from them, not give them a half-assed 600 RMS each!

If they haven't been hammered too much yet then yes, turn those gains down!

well on the gain it has normal at the top (middle) and i had it set just past that, so i'll turn it down.
but i can still turn my volume up high? with the subwoofer up or have that set at 0?

set everything to zero and turn the gains down, below normal. As trotty said, dont listen to it loud either keep it about 15/22 etc And leave it for a week or two...or 72hrs - think that is correct, its what was told to my mate.
btw corb, what sub/amp system you got going?
