does it matter if you mount them ass out? or can u only do this with certain types?

the box would have to be smaller

as said the box needs to be smaller by the volume of the sub itself if tail out.

But as subs have a range of volumes and the volume of the sub is not huge, if u get a box in the range of values that are ok it will be fine still. Sub will only be 0.5 to 2 litres or so anyhoo depending on what it is.

just go for a box at middle to low end of size range then it will be fine.
