Basically I have a wireless ADSL router that shares the internet connection between my Dads PC and my laptop, I was wondering if there is anyway I could set up a network so I could transfer some of the files from my Dads PC to my laptop over the router. Any help would be great

Its not automatically done though is it numpty!!
you need to a) share the hard drive! they id type the IP on the machine in the run command window think its //IP then should open a command prompt with passwords do that should have access to hard drive
