I had an Opteron running at over 3Ghz using standard air cooling. Fully stable.

im pretty sure this could take a lot more with a decent PSU.

That's the thing. When overclocking you really need to make sure you have decent quality components. Things like memory and power supplies are vital.

still slow for a 2800+XP



That was my 2600+XPM chip... I'd be interested to see how yours compares doing a winrar benchmarking...
