i have a wireless router downstairs and have got myself a pci adapter, will this get me on the internet without the use of the dongle?

Correct,
check the installation process before you install it. With mine I had to add the drivers before the PCI card

if by pci adaptor, you mean a PCI wireless network card then yes, it will do the same job as the dongle

im running vista btw and when i frist put it in, it was installing itselfs! but still no connection !
