Im very happy with mine. Seems spot on for daily driving as your never short on power for normal driving and with standard suspension they are super comfy and dont handle too badly.
Just watch out for rust and knackered interiors and smokey engines. Or if your not fussed on having a gsi get a 1.6 sport

I'd go for as later GSI you can find, with low miles. Doesn't really matter which engine.

I have my Corsa since December 1994
Used to be an 1.4 sport, since 1999 it has the X16XE engine on steinmetz throttle bodies (152ps RR'd a week ago).
I'm very happy with it, sometimes it's true that it has let me down but it was due to bad selection of people dealing with it. Get one!

Are the differences between the X16XE & C16XE the EGR Valve (in X16XE) and the ECU?

C16XE is still an Ecotec, just doesn't have the front secondary air intake on the manifold, has plastic upper inlet manifold (tat), and slightly larger ports (hence the amazing 3bhp difference)
tbh I agree with Dean_W, just get a later GSi and do that. Same engine as the sport, the secondary air intake can just be binned, and its just as tuneable (cheaper to fit a mantzel or lexmaul too as you dont have to replace the lower inlet manifold)
I've had 117bhp out of mine twice at 2 separate RR's... full catback lexmaul system, magnex decat, pipercross induction kit, astra rear intake piping (smoother than whats on the sport). Oh ye its also a hybrid XE/XEL
