now i know this sounds really stupid but i need to check

a brake drum is that i brake disk just another word for it

no, a drum is on the rear of some cars. a disk is on the front and also on the back of higher spec cars.

if you have disks on the rear you will also have pads, if you have drums your braking will be controlled with cylinders and shoes.
