What feature does a mobile phone need to use sim cards from other countries?
If I put a Spanish simcard in my K800i whilst in Spain, will it work?

Tri band is for America isn't it? All should work in Europe as far as I'm aware.

AFAIK the k800i has tri-band, so I assume it will work.

tri band is for use in America.
Spain uses the same system/frequencies that we do.
The phone will have to not carry a sim lock if you wish to put another operators sim card in it.
If its unlocked, just pop the sim in and carry on
