Can anyone check the true position of TDC with a dial gauge with reference to the actual timing marks on the crank pulley?

The fact it is a linear motion on the end of a circular one means it is bloody piss easy to tell when it is TDC!

Thats not what I'm asking is it?

How confident are you with that figure Dave? I can figure out whether its BTDC or ATDC from that.

To get my cam timing in Ricardo WAVE spot on. When measuring the cams I used the timing mark on the pulley, but the results suggested this was not the true TDC.

what are you building?

I have often found that using simulators to determine cam timing works well in theory but often the calculations are thrown out of the window when setting up the cams on the dyno. I used a Lotus engine simulator to design my new cams to get minimal overlap low down that didnt sacrifice high revs power.

C16XE with mantzel, standard cams and exhaust. Then developing new cams and exhaust manifold from that.

There will be differences on the dyno due to the valvetrain acting as a damper, especially with hydraulic lifters.
