Author laptop wont boot up, help needed please!

my brother is round and has brought round a small acer laptop, doesnt have a cd drive, it wont boot up, even in safe mode and he is unsure what to do, anyone have any ideas?

when trying to boot up in safe mode the screen just goes blank.

Is it a netbook? Aspire?
They can boot from USB IIRC if you have a Linux/XP/Ubuntu iso etc....

Is it under warranty? or changed any hardware recently such as Ram?

Might be better to take it back and have it looked at.

just going blank, he's going to try saving the recovery disk to a flash drive and sorting it tomorrow.

is the rest of the computer still running when the screen goes blank? your laptop might be overheating, ive sorted a couple out with this problem (one was an acer too). the ventilation for the fan gets blocked with dust and eventually clogs up, hence the cpu fan cant dispose of the heat causing the laptop processor to overhead and automatically shut down. If you remove the back of the laptop and remove the dust build up, you might be ok. The laptop i did it on had a CD drive. Good luck either way
