Got some problems with an x16xe

It will start, but it'll struggle to idle, it'll struggle to take revs, once you do get it to rev over 3k rpm it's ok but the manifold was glowing red hot...

NOw I'm thinking it could be something as simple as a blocked cat??

Or maybe the timing is out?

Anyone shed some light beofre I start messing about with it,

I'd take a guess at the CTS (coolant temperature sensor). For the sake of £15ish, its worth a try, although unfortunately it may have also killed your cat, like it did with mine

cat isn't a problem to me as I work with exhausts all day long, so I can remove it and de-cat it to test if its worked

But hadn't thought on the CTS so cheers

Yea, when my CTS went, it did about 10-15 mpg, and would just about manage to run until up to temperature.

When it reached temp though, it cut out, really struggled to restart, and then did as you said - wouldn't idle well at all, but if you managed to rev it it would run ok further up the range.

mine was doing this last week turned out to be the EGR valve.
if your engine management lights on you should read the codes.

For peoples reference it was the crankshaft pully key. It was chewed round.
