Okay, so I have a shitty old nokia but want the iphone on my £35 a month unlimited txts+calls contract with 02. If I got a unlimited internet bolt on would this work in the iphone?

You get unlimited (aka 200mb) worth of data via Edge, GPRS or 3G.
It's exactly the same as what you'd get if you took out the contract with o2, except you don't get access to the WiFi places, such as the The Cloud, which are available at most places with an IT Box (so a pub) or the airport.

Just get unlimited internet!

Yeah you can connect to any WiFi, but if you take out an iPhone contract you get free access to The Cloud, as Joe said
You getting the 3G or 3GS?

Won't be cheap as they have a half eaten apple logo on them, but ebay or AVForums is your best bet.
