Soooo. I had my headgasket done a while ago, and the rocker cover gasket was not done properly (there was oil getting into the spark plugs and into the leads). So i had that re done a month ago. It was all good, there is no oil getting through any more as it was all sealed up. BUT it is still smoking abit! (alot at times unless i put my foot down and clear it all out!)

I dont have a clue what it could be, i do need to change the plugs but i dont think it would be that. The only thing i think it could be, would be the cat or the sensors around it. I had a new one fitted at the start of november with new sensors as it failed on emissions. And i now think that because it has been running whilst pumping oil through it (from the spark plugs) for that month before i got the rocker cover gasket sorted, it may have blocked the sensor, or just killed the Cat?

As i say, thats just a complete guess as i dont have a clue about anything like this.

Any help would be good!!

Does it smoke just a bit when you first start up, if yes then thats valve seals letting by which is common ,mine smokes a bit at start up, if it smokes when driving then you have more of a problem, do a compression test and take it from there but probably seals, do you have high oil consumption, will have nothing to do with cat or sensors.

Right, what colour is the smoke?

1.4/1.6 16v engines are ment to use a fair amount of oil, there high maintenance engines (Hence most go bad).

If its blue smoke its prob piston rings or valve stem seals, white smoke is water, which could mean a cracked head.

Its white really. It will smoke when i start it, but only a bit, you can tell as it is warming up it gets worse. Like driving down my road, as i change gear it seems to send a load out the back.

Erm, not unusual no. Its always smelt like its running very rich.

Im not sure wether it would just be a blocked sensor, telling the car to put too much shite through the system :s

mine has been puffing out white smoke for the last 5 years and nothing has gone on it yet and doesnt loose a drop of coolant, even after a 100 odd mile motorway journey the buggers still smoking, the 14/16xe engines do use oil like a bitch sometimes iirc the owners manual states they should use up to 1l of oil per 1k,

my corsa was smoking a tad bit so i whipped the head off and replaced the valve stem seals as the were weaping a little and all is fine now, but if the smoke is white then it might be water, if oil was getting thru then it might have eaten away at your new head gasket?

Hmmm, well if i stick my hand behind the exhaust, it doesnt seem to wet/damp if that makes sense. But it deffinatly is not blue smoke :s

How much would it be to get valve seals done at a garage?

Also do not use thin oil or synthetic, use a semi synth 15/40 this might help to reduce the smoke a bit.

use 10/40 semi synth its the stuff it was designed to run on..

if you use 5/30 it burnes it quicker and will smoke more

You should use thicker oil as the engines get older anyway. Dont ever do a oil flush on it or anything like that, removes all the oil coating.
And that is when you get leaks at least.

cheers guys. I am using 10/40 at the moment. Still smoking lots.

The engine warning light just came on, on the way to work today tho, and it is running fine. Which makes me think its a sensor, but as i say, i dont have a clue
What could cause that to come on, any ideas? Im going to check oil etc later

As above, paperclip test it. How long was the light on? constant?

Very well could be a sensor, or theres another fault and the sensor has picked it up.

Also, it has been using up quite abit more petrol than it used to. I used to be able to get 80+ out of £10 and now its more like 50-60 miles :s
