Hi guys, am I doing this right?

I have a 1.2 with the paper oil filter located on the top right of the engine.

When changing this (after draining the sump), there appears to be excess oil still in there.When I attempt to lift the filter out it overpours over the engine bay until the filter is lifted off then resumes to drain out through the sump.

Is my technique wrong or is this the way (surely not!)

Happened with me everytime I did it on my old one. Just break the seal slowly and let the oil drain back and out the plug hole.
