Hey, does anyone have any experience (good/bad/otherwise) with portable Air Conditioning units at home?
My front room is on an upper level, and it gets VERY warm pretty much from this time of year onwards. We had a little rotating fan unit last year, but it's noisy and not particularly effective - so thinking about spending a bit of ££ this year and getting something more adequate.

I want something that'll be reasonably quiet, and I'm not particularly fussy about energy efficiency - as I pay a flat rate 
The exhaust hose worries me, I'm guessing I'd need that out of a window or something - and the whole point of getting an A/C unit is so that I can keep windows closed and bugs out - I live right by a field and a river so get mozzies quite bad in summer.
Any opinions/alternatives are welcome

you get a cover that goes in the window to stop any bugs getting in. You could get a wall one fitted that has the hole behind it

We had a portable unit in work last year, complete waste of time tbh.
Plus like you say the window needs to be open to hang the hose out of

Hmmm I'm leaning towards open windows and a bit of pest control for the nasties tbh.

This is where your problem will be. Most of the cheaper units will be quite noisy. The only way to get rid of the noise is to have a split unit which is much more involved and permanent.
We've got one of the approx £300 units and while it is noisy i have found it to be great. Few summers ago we used in in the living room to cool it down. It was often 30 degrees+ in there but managed to keep it down below 20.
Last couple years our bedroom has been getting really warm again circa 30+ degrees. Before going to bed we turn the cooler on for an hour or two and then the room will be down around the 16 degree mark.
Yes you have to open a window but this does not really cause too much problem. Its amazing to see the heat that comes out of the exhaust. You realise it really is moving some heat.

Just dont get an air cooler / humidfier... Spend the extra and get an air conditioner.
