I can just imagine my Mum reading their statement:
"The messaging and browsing delays... in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Brazil, Chile and Argentina were caused by a core switch failure within RIM's infrastructure,"
"Although the system is designed to failover to a back-up switch, the failover did not function as previously tested."
"As a result, a large backlog of data was generated and we are now working to clear that backlog and restore normal service as quickly as possible."
Thanks for the help RIM.

Taken straight from Wikipedia:
Large organizations may operate more than one NOC, either to manage different networks or to provide geographic redundancy in the event of one site being unavailable or offline.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_Operations_Center
How can a failure in Slough affect handsets in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Brazil, Chile and Argentina. That's just insane!
Also, as I understand it, you can't even browse the web at the moment? That's also insane, why does all your web browsing have to route via RIM? Shouldn't people be kicking off about how they're spying on you e.t.c... I know if App............

Ah right, I think I should take what Newsbeat on Radio 1 with a pinch of salt. They're usually pretty inaccurate, especially when it comes to technology.

Ed the main BB browser works via RIM's server. you can manually type in your networks APN and download Opera and browse freely, however be warned if you do not have the correct data package (I.e normal GPRS as opposed to a BBServices bundle) you will be charged extra.
Wifi/UMA works fine. BBM is still down and i have had sporadic emails all day. Can't refresh Twitter or FB.

All Blackberry data goes through the RIM data centers. Apparantly is compressed and encrypted too. Didnt it all kick off in Middle East about RIM "spying"??
IDK, dont care really. I'll stick to my Android

Nothing to do with RIM spying, as you say the data is encrypted and routes through RIM and that's why UEA and co had issues with it because they wanted access to the encrypted data.
I agree though, a network failure shouldn't take out half the world; seriously bad network design if that was the case.

It seems to happen all the time, BT and other telecoms companies seem to be at the mercy of a single point of failure, no idea how it can be allowed to happen.

I heard the Steve Jobs' death was a fake, and he's now infiltrated Blackberry to take them down to increase Apple sales even more

Lack of budget, shit network architects and cutting corners. And it's allowed because the people at the top haven't got a clue about what their running.
