We had to butcher the engine loom on my 1.2 16V when fitting an XE.
Putting a 1.6 you can do the same. I couldn't be arsed swapping looms even though I had a spare GSi loom.

The 1.2 has an integrated loom so you can't swap the engine loom. You either have to fit a 1.4 or 1.6 loom enabling you to remove the engine loom, So you can fit the engine loom of the engine you plan to use or cut into the existing integrated and wire the engine loom in that way.

you just cut the plug off the loom in the engine bay that comes from the dash, pull the wires through back under the dash and join them to the x16xe loom colour for colour think theres like 3 you need to find yourself

I'm sure I had a few that didn't connect to the XE loom when I did mine.

You dont need to change it the reason for changing is its easier neater and less hassle then leaving 1.2 16v one in as if you do it needs to pulled back threw then the new engine one has to go threw aswell to match up to the 1.2 one bout 5 wires then its just tidying under dash job done
