Is this ok to do and would it cause any problems to the way the engine runs?
It's a 20XE engine.

For M.O.T time as the emissions go by the year of the car and not the year of the engine.

You can do it yes Mark
EDIT: And the emissions go by whatever is the oldest So you can go with a precat engine without a cat on a car that came with a cat.

Really. The lads at the garage says even if it doesn't have a cat when it comes to it there would be around it one way or another.
Would be getting a system made up once it's in up & running.

All the garages I've used have said the same thing to me about the age of engine or the car.
They were happy as long as I had some proof of the engine age
I know some garages are a bit funny on it but it's on the DVLA website somewhere as I was looking for it when I had my MOT

quote: Vehicles Fitted with a differnt engine
Test according to which is older, engine or vehicle.
e.g. A 1995 car fitted with a 1991 engine (of whatever make), test to 1991 standards for emission purposes.
Note: The onus is on the vehicle presenter
to prove engine age.
That's off of this website: http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_730.htm

Its meant to come down to whichever is oldest car or engine but most MOT testers don't even know the rules themselves. Comes down to the MOT tester at the end of the day.
Mine passed without a Cat when it was meant to have one, MOT man found it quite amusing that it had a straight through scafolding pole
