Fitted engine to coupe today (Z22SE) and turned it over and it has zero compression on all 4 cylinders :cry:
Unknown when it was last run but a good while, been stored in a cold and damp garage.
Chain is intact and cams spin and valves open and close, it sparks and fuels.
Have tried putting a cap full of oil down each cyclinder and still no joy, also tried briefly firing 24v through the starter motor to get it to spin faster in the hope the cranking may produce enough heat to free them up.
Have now put some redex treatment into each plug hole and will leave over the weekend to eat away at the carbon.
Only other ways of freeing them would be to get the car towed and have it in second gear with clutch up to possibly free them up :dunno:
Another option I thought of was to make a adapter for my heat gun to blow some hot air down into the pistons to warm and expand the alloy pistons to hopefully free the rings that way :dunno:
Anymore suggestions other than strip the engine down?

are you sure it ran before? zero comp on all cylinders is unlikely to be sticking rings and if they have stuck you will need to strip the engine and hone the bores and fit new rings. have you done a comp test and checked the bores with a bore scope? these engines are prone to bores going oval and needing rebores and heads cracking around the plugs. do you know the mileage of the engine? brake fluid works to decoke old engines that havent been run for a long time. put a small amount into the intake ports and wind engine over by hand. leave to soak over night then flush with carb cleaner. best to do this with out down pipe on as lambda sensors and cat dont like oil!

Can only go off what previous owner said, had done 82k miles and ran fine.
Rings can stick due to dissimilar metals and carbon build up, and can be unstuck, I have read about using brake fluid but also heard it then rights your oil off so will leave that as a last resort as I've just put fresh oil in.
Have put a cleaner in and will leave over the weekend and see if its helped, my hydraulic lifters may well be empty as well which will be leaving the valves slightly open

bore scope would be a good idea, if you havnt heard the engine runing it may of had a snaped chain and a bent valve or 2, just enough to stop it sealing and as its been left a while oil has drained out of the lifters? you had the cam cover off? checked for previous damage? you can also use duck oil in the cylinders what ever you use an oil change once its been run up to full temp would be a good idea.

My Puma did it after being layed up a while, they freed up just by running it.
That ran though, just lumpy.
I like the towing it idea.

Haven't got a borescope at work unfortunately, had the rocker cover off and chain is intact and oil is getting to head, may well just be empty lifters so will give it a tow and see what happens

my z22se sat for 6 months before i put it in the corsa fired up fine just a slight tick for a few seconds, fitted a 2.5l 24v bmw lump for a mate that had sat for 2 years in a damp shed that was ok to just a couple of sticky lifters till it warmed up. if it doesnt start after a sort tow remove the cams and check all the valves are the same height.

Tbh I've never had it before myself if a decent tow does nothing then tbh it will be rebuild or new engine

Try a cylinder leak down test? Will be able to hear exactly where its leaking from.

i know a mixture of deisel and oil about 50/50 is the best way of clearing engines of unwanted carbon.... but that only realy works when there running
so maby just some deisel down the spark plug hole and leave to soak, then a long bar on the bottom pulley bolt?
