Not sure if he had the spring fitted when he pushed it down,he just said they dont seem to return when pushed down.

if it doesn't have the spring in it won't. You'd have to pull it back up. Or it might return a little bit but not the full way

A shock absorber that isn't fuked should return all the way up on its own. Will take about 5 seconds but it will come all the way back up without the need to pull it.
