I think my HDD is making a horrendous noise, which means I need to back up photos quickly, as a minimum.

Now we have an external HDD but it is only 500GB and an old school thing with moving parts and needing plug socket.

What external HDD would people recommend to back up my 'My Documents'? It is about 120GB which I can cut down by getting rid of old shit music etc so isn't a huge amount, but doesn't fit on the 500GB external due to dad's work stuff.

Not sure on fitting a new HDD to the tower and transfering across as the PC was built in 2004 and the right HDD spec is probably going up in price because it is so old all I know is the existing HDD is 7200rpm and SATA.

Any help would be much appreciated

personally, I REALLY rate the Seagate goflex range, something like This

That's the USB 3 version, which will future proof you and the speed difference is incredible (35mb/s vs 600mb/s).

You could save some money and buy the USB2 version, otherwise, if you wanted to save a little more, look at the Western Digital Mybooks, but they're not a patch on the seagates.

That's the other thing, as my PC is 2004 I'm not sure what the USB will be, probably 2.0.

Is USB 3.0 tech backwards compatible to before 2.0?

And how will I know if the external HDD is SSD? The fact it doesn't need plug socket power?

Yeah USB 3.0 is backwards compatible and if it's an SSD then it'll be silent as it's just like a big flash drive essentially - they are 2.5" so will be USB powered.

Hmmm I'm thinking of buying a new PC / laptop which could be USB 3.0.

Would a 1.1/2.0 external be compatible with 3.0? e.g. is it forward compatible?

Yes.
But remember your talking about copying huge amounts of data!
As a rough comparison, copying 120GB over;

USB 1.1 = 25hours
USB 2.0 = 37 Mins
USB 3.0 = 5 Mins

Think down the line when your needing to backup even more data, I wouldn't skimp for the sake of £20 or £30.

So a decent 1TB (1000GB right) and USB3.0 is the way to go?
