Author flickering hid bulbs.

bought some a while ago, fitted them and noticed that one of the bulbs is flickering. is this a fitting issue or will it be the ballast/bulb that's faulty?

i only noticed it when i saw the lights on the road in the dark. can't see it when you look directly into the headlamp.

think you need to add in some resistors, commonly talked about on bmw forums

Swap the ballast over and retest.

As Allan said, try swapping them. Could be dodgy ballast or bulb tbh. Did it on my Corsa C sometimes.

cheers. onlyproblem with that is it's a bumper/headlamps off job again. access inside the wheel well is non existent.

the whole hid kit including ballasts are inside the headlamp, it's just my manly hands aren't able to navigate through the window in the wheel arch.

Need a proper relay harness.

Your cars wiring is not designed for powering the ballasts.

If the whole bumper needs to come off to do it I'd just stick a set of normal bulbs back in. You'll be back in there again before long.

drivers side, jambo. the bulb also looks a different colour than the passenger side, it's more of a greeny colour than the ice white it's supposed to be (6000k).

this is why i wondered if it was a fault with the bulb.

It could be a sign the bulbs on its way out. I have it on mine. I swapped the bulbs over and the flickering changed sides. Still not got round to replacing them yet.

It could be a number of things. But regardless get a proper harness. Not expensive, nor difficult. Will safeguard your car from fire and make the wires last

They can flicker if you have a poor earth. Make sure it's grounded correctly.

You need the hid resistor packs that come with the canbus systems. They "hold' a constant current from the oem looms and stop flickering. I've done this on 2 cars and its solved it.

are those plug and play? i still don't understand why only one flickers, as i'd assume they'd both flicker if the factory wiring system weren't up to powering them.

yeh, fit all kits as theyre the same connectors. Irs more to do with how the current is supplied to the ballast and hows its converted.These just hold the power at a constant.

Read up on HIDplanet. The wiring on your car is not designed for xenons, and you have bodged some in on projector bowl headlamps. Some people experience no issues, some don't. If you don't experience them now, you will eventually. The wiring gets too hot and will become brittle over time or short out etc..

Just get a harness and do it properly. This will mean your wiring and car is safe and the bulbs/ballasts will get correct volt/ampage.

Then all you need to do is get some proper projectors
