My wifes Corsa has developed a problem thats really bugging us. If you try to rev through the gears, the little car with the spanner light flashes on once, then goes off and all of a sudden the car will not go above 3,000 revs which I understand is limp mode.
The handbook says this light is water in the diesel. So, we've given the car full service including new fuel filter thinking this would remove the problem. The problem still exists!
So got diagnostics done at Vx and they had the following codes:
P0234 - turbo
P0638 & 683 - glow plugs
P0400 - egr
They've told us we need a new turbo, glow plugs and EGR valve at a cost of over £1,000.
Its done 60,000 miles now but we've had it from 8,000 miles and its never been thrashed or driven hard and serviced regularly. With modern cars I wouldn't expect to have to replace a turbo on a 6 year old car with average miles!
Is it common for these CDTi Corsa's to require a new turbo?
The thing that worrys me is vx state there is no guarantees any of the above will fix the problem meaning I have little confidence in their diagnosis, despite the fault codes. These could all be linked to 1 issue

Take the intake pipe off the turbo, give te shaft a wiggle if there's aload of play you need a new turbo, if not they are trying to rip you off.

P0234 is turbo overboost - that can be caused by other factors and doesn't necessarily mean a faulty turbo.
P0638 is actually the throttle actuator -
P0683 is the glow plugs or the glow plug control module (wont cause limp mode issues)
P0400 is EGR flow.
You need to get the codes completely reset and cleared - then get it read again as soon as the fault condition happens again. They are just telling you to replace everything the computer says which is pointless.
For example - my Mercedes recently had issues saying turbo underboost, egr fault, intake manifold boost pressure, and air flow mass too low .... all of that was caused by a blocked catalytic converter.

ive had the same problem with my corsa D 1.3 cdti last summer, caused by lack of use. it was only getting moved on and off the drive to get other cars out and the odd trip to the shop, about 3 miles round trip so never getting hot. soot in the exhaust system built up and chucked up loads of fault codes for egr, turbo, cat, ect. took it for a decent drive filled up with v power and pushed as hard as it would go in 1st 2nd and 3rd, loads of black smoke but it cleared the soot and the codes!

the wastegate are known for seizing and ecu will limit the engine to prevent damage ,modern diesels need regular servicing and driving hard to prevent parts carboning up

If it the light isn't on when you first start the car from cold, take it on the motorway for a few hard miles and that won't do it any harm.
