Just been playing the full version of need for speed underground.
Well, if your looking for a fast, arcade racer then this is pretty much spot on. If your looking for simulation style physics you won't be pleased.
The game, is pretty basic, but isn't as bad as I thought it'd be. You have little movie clips that are a bit cheesy, but add to the feeling of the game.
The main mode in the game is 'Underground' - You do a single race? possibly to prove yourself, I was in another room when this movie was playing and came back to find myself on the grid. Then you get 10,000 credits to spend on whatever car you like.
I selected the honda civic as it was just 10,000 creds...
At this stage in time its just a plain honda civic in white
The idea though, is to do races to win money and thus modify your car further, either by exterior mods or mods under the bonnet. The range of different bits for your car you can get is quite extensive, but you have to unlock a lot of it first.
What I thought was quite good was the fact that you can do several different race types, including circuit, drag racing and drifting
Style points basically unlock new things in the game, you get these for doing basic things like taking a short cut or not hitting anything through a section, to doing powerslides and having near misses. The style points are totalled up at the end of the race and will be multiplied by the number of style your car comes under.
So if your car is crap like mine, it won't get multiplied at all - but if your car is rating 5, they will be multiplied by 5 to give a new total.
The graphics are pretty damn sweet, providing of course your PC can handle it (which mine barely can). Nice reflections off car and road surface and plenty of traffic to dodge round as you speed through the streets.
The thing I found quite lacking, was a lack of 'cruise' feature - so once you have the most tricked out car, you can't just cruise round slowly while people admire you - although you can get your car featured in mags.
I haven't tried the online mode yet, although I did in the demo - and it was quite good fun. On Adsl there was little lag and you could take your car you'd made online against other humans in any of the game modes.
I'm still only early into the game, and I look forward to getting my adaptor to allow me to use my ps2 controller on my PC - but at this point I'd say to people wanting to buy it, don't expect too much. Maybe rent it first.
Anyone who wants to get a feel for it watch this vid - http://www.eagames.com/official/nfs/underground/us/videoclips.jsp?platformID=console&videoID=video_1_hi&mediaID=videos&resID=hi

lucky for some - what spec is your pc?
Mine's so old now,
900 mhz athlon, 256 mb of slow sdram, 46 gb hd + 6.4 gb hd, Geforce GTS 2 32 mb graphics card.
So slow...
I would prefere 2.8 ghz cpu, with 512 of ddr ram and a nice new 256mb graphics card oh and 2 120gb hd's giving me 240 gb
sadly I'm not rich.
I know parts are cheap these days, but to get a new cpu, I have to get a new motherboard and to get a new motherboard means I need new ram and while I'm at it I might as well get a new gfx card.
Anyone got any bits that are higher spec that what I've got, but they don't use i.e. took out of their pc and thought it wasn't worth selling.
I could do with a nice stick of 256 or 512mb of Sdram 168 pin - coz 256 is not enough and I constantly have several things running.
Anyone know what the fastest CPU the A-Bit KT7 motherboard could use?

F*ck it, I'm gonna read how to overclock an athlon and burn this CPU to shit - then replace it when it blows up.

Hmm, I just overclocked my CPU to around 1050 mhz from 900 - and I'm pretty sure I smelt something like 'burning' - I loaded up a program telling me temp's and it was around 60 degree C idling and rose quite high while in the game

arn't you supposed to get a larger fan when you overclock. might as well leave the case off, gives it more air

I have a 1.4 Ghz Athlon if u want it mate! Just upgraded my machine and its left over!
And i wudnt call an FX 5600 Ultra tiop spec, all the FX's are pap and the only ones worth anything are 5900 and 5950's, but they r way overpriced!
