dextron is just the rating isnt it?
I know i use Dextron III ATF in the RR, but Dextron rates PS fluid too doesnt it. I.e PS fluid and ATF are very similar!
I think Dextron II is superseeded by III

yes, dextron2 is atf fluid. used in vauxhall power steering systems.
an engine a mate bought a while back had this in the gearbox, still works fine now. any oil will work in a gearbox really, when I worked at ford they used to fill the gearboxes with engine oil when we ran out of gearbox oil.

yes.... colour doesnt mean good/bad
Dont go by colour. Go by what the box is supposed/designed to run with.
You do get red gear oil (Redline shockproof heavy i think for instance)
80/90 reflects the oil properties, nothing to do with its overall colour.

And they take more than 1.5L from empty.
I chucked 2L in mine(i can't remove my level plug as its rounded off, lol)
Proper Vauxhall Gearbox oil is red, Dextron III.
The stuff i used was just normal 80/90w gear oil, yellow colour, Stinks, lol.

new diff?
filling it with thicker oil will not solve the problem.
new box will cost you about £50 at the most.

If it wasn't whining before the oil change and it was straight after, then i'd say it wasn't the diff bearings...
Try chucking another 0.5L of oil in, might quieten it down.
You can't really overfill it anyway, as it will vent out the breather if its overfilled.
