Did the compression build up quickly? Or take a while and keep raising each time the engine turns over?

Get a tester, it just screws into the spark plug hole.

How much is it in parts to do the piston rings? and if the stem seals are fairly cheap would it be worth doing to be on the safe side?

rings are about £80+ a set, stem seals are £16 a set.

get a leakdown test done, that will determine where the leak is as opposed to trying to see if there is actually a leak.

plus a normal compression test isnt a sure sign of the rings being worn as it only tests the 2 top rings, the oil control ring could be damaged and seeping oil through the two top rings and burning on the bores.

I never trust the stem seals in HG sets unless they are Payen or FAI kits.

Just digging this up

Going to try and get a leak down test done somewhere local. Just wanted a few details on what it involves and how it works before I phone around.
So I can kind of pretend i know what i want
Short story is that i want to know if my piston rings are ok or not.

You fill the cylinder with compressed air, and it will leak out. You then listen to see where it is leaking out and this indicates what is worn. To find out if its piston rings take the dipstick out.

my gsi is using oil and smoking when cold and stops when warm but smokes past 6000rpm (blue smoke) and the tappets/lifters make a noise aswell, and get worse when the oil is low

what test would i need to have done?
