so just to clear some things up:
if i got one of these, whacked a PAYG sim in, unlocked it, the internet and other functions would work if i was in range of a free wireless function? how many places have this free wifi? also i wouldnt get charged anything off my PAYG credit? what happens when you aren't in range of wireless? can you still use the internet and how much would this cost etc?

So, im on orange, and have about 8 months left on my 18 month contract, and i have a N95
At the moment, i get 600 mins of calls and unlimited txts
If i did this iphone thing, could i use the 600 mins and unlimited txts as i would with the n95?

You can obvisly use your own wireless network for free. And other places, like some pubs or macdonalds if they advertise free wifi.
You can also use the internet with out being on a wireless network using EDGE. Pretty slow compaired to a 3g internet phone. Not sure on prices for PAYG

What about the wifi advertised as part of the iphone contracts?

I think you would need the iPhone contract for that or have it as a bolt on option to your current sim card.
Correct me if I'm wrong though. Haven't tried using it in a wifi hotspot

Don't O2 customers get free WiFi at O2 wireless hotspots, or is that T-Mobile?

Yeah as ed says 02 customers get free wifi access called cloud. Without the contract you wont get this but can still access other wifi hotspots.

i know here in Ireland I got an iPhone, unlocked it, signed up to a standard 02 contract (12 months, 170mins, 100sms) and added the 1gig data add on and works a treat.
connection speed is around 100k on EDGE. Not ligthening, but for web browsing its grand.
