car had been idling all over the shop, sometimes it wanted to tick over at 3k other times itd sit rnd 900 and fluctuate up to 1200, then other times it sits at 2k and goes down or up, i considered getting a new throttle cable but the car does all this revving on its own so got an idle valve, i have fitted it and tried taking it out for a spin, allowing it get warm then tootling along at 40mph as this is supposed to reset it, but it has not, car still seems to like revving at 4k, i am going to try disconnecting battery and see what it does from there.

Could i be experiencing throttle position sensor problems? or something more serious/ simple?

Throttle position sensor or more likely Air mass meter. Changing oil/coolant temp sensor has nothing to do with idle speed... The above two do.

i cannot remeber if this enginbe looks like mine or not, but if it dus, hav a look at the Pipe That joins the top part of the inlet manifold to the throttle bodie as mine had a split in it and was making the car idle mad, worth a try

its done it a few times, i replaced ecu cos that was getting damp if u remember dude, i had tried just bout everything and found the loom was getting wet in and coming down to ecu, sealed it up big time and new ecu and was sweet as, but it still bin idling funny. How hard os throttle position sensor to sort and kinda cost? the car seems to make the ICV push its foot allllllllllllllllll the way out whenever i have removed it

are they pricey tho? if they aint will tackle it full on lol! so does urs hold revs at bout 3-4k then??? its embarrassing and makes u look like u cant drive turn the engine off n bk on n its sitting at 2, move off in 1st, and ease off the power, dip clutch and its bk up again.dont get me wrong i love the car just dont like the fiddly bits to replace, too many sensors n stuff its so confuddling, new ICV cost me 40quid for official vaux item not bad not bad...
