rite...
my mum and dad have a tendancy to just turn my computer off at the mains.. which is very annoying if im downloading something of its defraggin or virus checking... u get the picture..
now i went to tun it on this morning to find it doesnt work.. i remembered that they switched it off at the main, so i flicked it back on and pressed the power button..
power came on for a second then went off.. dead machine.. just as im about to have a look inside it jumps to life.. lasts about 10 seconds then dies for good..
so i turn all power off and on and try again.. now it starts when i press the power button but still cuts out after about 10 secs..
does anyone know what could be causing this??
p.s i cant do any tests at the mo coz i got anygry and put a screwdriver through my CPU... oops..

sounds like it could be the power supply mate. I'd start there first.
I wouldnt rule out any of the other components though.

Could be anything, really, if it's been switched off at the mains a few times......but, if you've tested with a new PSU, you can possibly rule that out.
Possibly motherboard, though, if the power to it's been suddenly shut off.
Oh, and educate your parents never ever to turn a computer off by the mains, under ANY circumstances (well, maybe if it's on fire).

sounds like something has gone pop, if its working for 10secs then dieing im guessing PSU is fine, i suspect motherboard has fried somehwere, or a component has given up, causing a serious lock-up or crash

Disconnect all the hard-drives, and boot it up......should go through BIOS, and then give you a System Disk Error (or similar).

I would have thought that the HDD is the component most likely to take damage when switched off at the mains

if it was the hdd it would still boot up but then tell you theres no hdd installed,
sounds like motherboard to me, if it comes on for a few seconds then stops make sure your cpu fan is spinning,

tbf does sound like the PSU
if the computer is on when its switched off at the mains, espech if its doing something like a virus scan or has a bit of system load, its enough to strain the psu and damage it a little
id just tell your folks they killed it, get them to buy a new psu or replace the computer, and fit an isolator to the socket so they cant turn it off

unplug everything apart from ram. graphics card and power.
you might need the cpu in there too, but you should be able to stable boot to the BIOS with only those things
