Hi to everyone, please excuse this new member diving in straight away with some questions!
Just acquired 1.2GLS 1997, 110k but in overall clean condition.
If the car has been left for a while then started up there is a running water sound on startup.
This goes after 20 or so secs.
Heater works fine.
Should I be concerned or doing anything/investigating?
Local garage says sometimes they do this.
Should mention that the cooling system has been drained due to cyl head reskim and new water pump fitted - could bleeding be required? But should be self bleeding? Expandion tank is approx half full.

That's what has just been fixed supposedly...
Why is the temporary sound of running water such a giveaway?

it might be due to other reasons, its just one of the symptoms associated with hg failure.
could also be down to airlock/heater matrix

Ironically mine has started doing it after I had the Water Pump Changed. Niiiiice.

you cant jump to HG failure straight away. it could well be the heater matrix. look for other signs of HG failure like creamy mayo in the oil, or contaminated coolant

could even be a slipping alt belt. they sound like that.

not necessarily HG failure, could be an airlock, or a fucked heater matrix, like monkeh says.
does it get hot?

What it is is air in the water passing through the heater matrix.
Numerous things can cause this.
If the water system has been tampered with recently for example headgasket change or water pump then you could expect it for a couple of days.
But after a few days it should have bled itself out if it continues then it is still getting ai in and one of the most likely things is headgasket!

Yes the heater does get hot
If it IS headgasket, what would cause the temporary sloshing sound on startup, then silence?
ie what's the mechanism?
