took car to garage today to identify the cause of my engine "hunting" the bloke said hes had it plugged into the machine and its just reading "ecu error" no codes or anything lol, he said the ecu was probably knackered, (i originally took it there to clean icv and replace my egr as i think its these that are causing my probs ( hesitating, revs sticking at 1.5k, bogging down whilst setting off etc) but tbh i think garages are as lazy as me and cant be bothered to change my parts 
any truth behind the "ecu error"?
sympoms of knackered ecu would be??

i cant see how the ecu would make the car / engine....
kangaroo
idle slightly lumpy
revs stck at 1.5k after a long run then hesitates at junctions,
after doing a search kangarooing revs sticking etc general problems that crept up everytime were egr icv's no mention of the ecu.
