What does this do exactly and if it had 3mm play from left to right(whilst looking at it) would it cause the car to feel like it was missfiring low down in the revs?

ummm end float is way out there man.

if its deflecting that much you might need to be looking at bottom end rebuild or new block if the engine dont ahve thrust washers

It seems that the pulley has enlarged itself somehow, as the key way on the timing pulley at the bottom is fine but the actual crank pulley has opened itself out.the pulley doesnt move towards or away from the block it moves forwards and backwards to the front and rear of the car about 3mm either way due to the enlarged keyway on it! i cant understand why this has happened but i think it may be the cause of a few issues on my car!ie starting then stalling, starting and driving then dumping the clutch and it cutting outfeels like its jerking sometimes on and off the accel and not picking up revs from 1000 to around 2500 very quickly.

Yeah that could cause the problem because the RPM sensor gets its signal from the teeth on the outside of the pulley (on most vaux engines, whats in yours?)

I wouldnt drive it with a loose crank pulley, is the nut tight in the middle? if it comes off theres nothing to hold the bottom pulley for the timing belt on and that can come off which will really ruin your day

The exact same thing happened to me on my C16XE. The syptoms i had was bogging down and missfire. There was also a serious lack in power.

its an x14xe mate,i took the crank pulley of and the bolt was probably finger tight to be honest but have torqued it up until i can get one from vaux.I reckon it is the crank pulley to be honest as i remember someone on here with similar probs not so long ago.And the pulleys fooked anyway so its gonna need a new one either way!
