I would expect them to be different due to the inlet manifolds being different. But thats just me trying to be logical.

An X16XEL is a 1.6 block with a 1.4 head and different inlet.

The heads are interchangeable between X14, X16 and X16XEL.

XEL has 100bhp but has higher torque (About 2-3lb ft) at a lower RPM than the X16XE.

Noticable difference is the inlet. It doesn't go straight back like normal, its a "wavey" inlet design.

BE carefull what gearbox it has on it, as the XEL will come out of Astras and Vectras and will have a hydrolic gearbox.

Funny enough, found the receipt from when i sold an XEL to someone after buying it in error off a user on here. Worked out i ended up with a profit

XEL

I'm just on the lookout for a 1.6 engine, my corsa's a 1.2 8valve and slow as.
but the wife won't let me go any bigger than a 1.6 as the cars used for school runs and wouldn't really have use for red top power anyway.
glad you mentioned the smaller ports though.......I'll have to get a 16xe.

If you need to buy a new head, i'd buy an X16 head.
