i was changing my head light bulb last night and thought when im under here mayswell check the oil, so pulled the dipstick out and it was fine, so thought i'd see how much was in and when i opened the oil cap it had a creamy substance on the rim

my brother said it may be the headgasket, but i dont give my car stick =/

any other opinions welcome

if its only on the rim of the oil cap it'll just be the water in the air reacting with the oil

if the oil in your engine, and the water in your header tank are fine then don't worry about it.

How long do head gaskets normally last? mileage wise? and is it expensive to change?

And any other symptons other than the creamy mayo substance in oil?

Depends on alot of factors really. Also depends on what engine. Quite alot of labour involved to change one but parts can be had for under £100.

If your handy with the spanners you can do a head gasket yourself and save £££. My sister was quoted £450 for a 1.1 206 from a local garage. I'd have a go yourself tbh.

If anything goes wrong, Dave A isnt that far away from you

If its not over-heating and theres no sign of 'mayo' on the dip stick its fine, just give the car a good run to clear out the condensation.

if you do lots of short journeys that can cause oil and water mix on the cap just clean it off and keep an eye on the oil and water levels

I have 'cream' under the oil cap/around the rim all winter - thought it was the headgasket last year and still going strong. Cleared up in the summer. I do long journeys often enough to clear out the damp from cold journeys.

If you aren't getting heat through the heaters when the car has warmed, it's idling like nobodies business and using loads of water plus smoke out the rear (not just condensation when you've started it up) then I'd say it isn't the headgasket

Pressure in the cooling system - feel the rad pipes make sure they're squeezable not solid. Smell for exhaust gas in the expansion tank when running.
