I've kinda been bollocked for using my work mobile phone excessively for text messages so I'm going to have to get on a personal contract again
It will literally only be for texting, so I've had a look at contracts and there are some very cheap ones from Vodafone and Orange which are 18/24 months with unlimited texts and 0 minutes, which is perfect. Also get a (kinda crappy) selection of free handsets too.
Before I take the plunge with one of these deals, could anyone more in the know re: mobile phones suggest something, as I've not bought a mobile contract for about 3 years now and I'm a little out of date!!
A QWERTY keyboarded phone would be awesome, but perhaps a little too much to ask

I'm on one of these - it's awesome. If you want to cancel, you can, as they run on a monthly basis.
Also consider PAYG. O2 do deals whereby the more you top-up, the more free txts you get.
Consider how much you'd spend in credit over a monthly tariff, it may be cheaper, particularly if using only at the weekend

The only problem is with a sim only contract, is that I'd have to get hold of a handset.
Fair enough I can pick one up for fuck all nowadays but with a contract I could be getting something a little more up to date with no initial cost... if that makes sense.
Will look into the HTC handsets when I get home.
Cheers!

can you not just offer to pay your work the money back for any texts, that'd be a lot cheaper surely?

Tried it, it's not the money that matters apparently it's the principle that I'm using a work mobile phone for obviously personal purposes.
Worst thing is, I dont even get paid oncall (yet still expected to answer it all the time) - If there wasnt the constant threat of redundancy at the moment I'd just drop my phone off on the bosses desk and tell him to stick it, but for self preservation i'll be carrying two phones around with me from now on

Yep did it before for a couple of years, then went to brid one weekend - got too enthusiastic chasing a frisbee and both phones took a dunk
Never had two since, just remained with the work phone but now it looks like I'll have to expand my fleet again

couldnt you just get a new mobile and give them that as the works number?
if its just recieving calls for work surely that works out better than carrying 2 phones lol?
would they not subsidse the line rental also if the new number would be for work, mind you that might be to logical for an employer lol.

Nokia 6300 for about £70 PAYG is your best bet. Then either stay as PAYG, or go SIM Only.
With the threat of redundancy, surely it's better to eliminate costs in the event of redundancy i.e. PAYG or SIM Only can be cancelled easily for the sake of £70?!

Yes I am Legend and yes i'm from Selby
Only lived there since June though
Might have got hold of a free handset from someone so if it's any good - PAYG will be the way forward methinks !
Cheers for all the posts, feel free to keep the suggestions coming.

The thing with PAYG is, if it doesn't work out i.e. you're spending £20/month+, then just move to a simplicity tariff. Then if you have to cancel to cut your outgoings, you can.
