this cam pulley/tensioner is obviously busted and i need a new one
what could have caused it?
is it just a case of replacing it?
anything else involved?

Has that happened whilst the engine was running? If so you'll probably have bent valves.
Looks like it's just an old tensioner that has failed, Maybe belt was a little too tight?
If engine wasn't running fit a new belt kit and it should be fine, If it was running when it happened i'd stick belt on and turn over by hand if there's inteference then the head needs to come off.
