A mates laptop is faulty, it no longer loads, just sits at the page with the scrolling bar (Win Vista) you can leave it all day and it just sits there and never goes any further.

She showed it to an IT guy, he says its currupt and seems to be over heating, without having a good look at it.

I dont know if I can get into the boot/bios menu so unsure whether i'd be able to select 'boot from CD'

If I swapped out the hard drive and bought a WIN7 disc, might it solve the problem?

I'm guessing it was overheating because it just seemed to be running all the time.

Thanks

It might be a Ram problem.

Buy a cheap HD for a tenner off ebay, and give it a go. If it works, then buy a decent one.

ye i would try a repair disk, if its not booting to os as described try a vista recovery disc boot to disk and select repair, usually sorts out most issues

boot into safe mode first, first thing i'd be doing is making sure the boot.ini file was okay. then failing that a system restore perhaps. then failing that a format tbh. maybe even a new drive just in case

It wont boot at all, it sticks at the Vista version of this page:

Its an ACER laptop, new at end of 2008, would it take a standard HDD rather than a DELL type shitty fit?
