As a metal polisher. Your best bet would be to polish the letters first and mask them up before powder coating.

Most polishers would tell you to jog on as it would be very very easy to damage the powder coat polishing afterwards.

Masking the letters up would be almost impossible

not sure if you can do this with powder coating but i know it works with painting..
spray or powder coat the whole peice, then lay some masking tape over the lettering and sand through, if the lettering is raised it will just sand away the masking tape of the raised letters. then get polishing

One you can't use masking tape with powder coating as it will melt in the over, and another your can't polish the letters as powder is very tough..

If the letters are proud, then I would go for either powder coated then lathe the top off, or sanding block then polish..

Or polish, grease the letters then powder coat and peel tops off with Stanley blade

^ same as what I do with the backs of wheels where it mates with hub..

Hope this helps

I have decided not to have it powdercoated now instead il going to spray it myself.

Here is the actual plug cover i have to do it,the letters must be polished from factory as when i received it they were very dull so after a little autosol they have started to come up very shiney so going to polish them up with autosol and then use paint stripper to strip the old paint off then clean it up with white spirits and then using a tiny brush going over the letters with some grease so paint does not stick to the letters then once laquered and dried wipe the grease off to reveal the polished letters again voila hopefully anyway.

I would paint it all then use a small block of wood with a bit of sandpaper wrapped round to sand the tops of the letters.

Grease or similar stands a good chance of contaminating the surrounding area when you paint it.
