Trying to do this without paying £40 for a cable.

Anyone come up with a alternative?

Its the lightening connector.

lightening connectors have all sorts of anti-cheapskate protection don't they? i.e. if your Ipad detects a 'unauthorised' cable it can disable it? At least thats what I read about the iphones and the lightening connectors

Near on impossible as it isn't just a cable anymore, the cables have a small processor in them that actually pushed the signal over the HDMI cable using airplay.
