Right, I shall be puirchasing the upgrade pack tonight but I am unsure as to what happens to all programs I have installed? DO they get updated to run on XP or do I need to re-install programs? ALso, we have like Office 2000 suite (Word/Works/Money 2000) - do these get updated or do I lose these? Or does the upgrade contain an up to date version of Office

plain n simple...
don't bother with the upgrade version of XP, instead get the full product, ie, one for new computers... (if PC World or where-ever tell you differently, tell them to GTF)... Doing the Upgrade route will cause no end of problems & just fcuk you off!
Backup all your work from your ME Syetem, all of your documents, files, the lot!
You say about you having Office 2000, guessing you have the CD's??
Once your sure you've backed everything up, put in the XP disc, and boot from it... You want to then re-partition and re-format the drive with NTFS..
It explains it as you go along, but make sure you have the number of someone who has done this before incase you get stuck during this bit!
Now just sit back & let XP install... once its done, just put all your old software back on & then your files which you backed up!
But seriously, steer-clear of the Upgrade version of XP, and any other Upgrade Versions of windows... there more trouble than there worth!

Paul I have XP running on a Mobile P3-650, with 256Mb RAM... No problems at all on my setup, runs sweet as!
Also used to run it on an old Dual-Celeron 500 (P2-Core) (mind, being 2 CPU's, it would run nice!!)

I thought you could do a fresh install with an upgrade copy of XP? It will prompt you for the windows ME disc during installation to check that you qualify for the upgrade.

I think it still needs another version of windows as the Base install though... I know that was the case when someone I know was upgrading from 98 to Me (BIGGEST mistake ever!)

Yeah think this is true - Windows does a search on the boot record to make sure theres a Windows ver there.

IT was about 3 years ago and im 90% sure i did one of the following.
1) Reformatted the drive to get rid of messy ME install, then booted from xp cd, did an install, during install it prompted for a previous version of windows, i put in my 98 disc as my ME was an upgrade.
2) Installed over the messy ME install but did a fresh install of XP including changing file structure to NTFS.
but reading back over those 2 i defo think it was the first one.

Hmmmm... not 1000% sure now. Im almost positive it does a low level search for an operating system.

Nope it works like this.
Buy XP home upgrade disc, then when you come to install it and it cant find a copy of windows on your system, it asks you to insert a windows 98 or ME installation CD to prove that you are eligable to use the upgrade version.
