hi guys, as some may know i had a problem with a smokey engine.
as suggested on here i did a compression test with a friend.
we got a reading of 16bar off all cylinders, which we both agreed seemed high.
the engine is a c16xe, with 45mm taper throttle bodies, im not sure if the head has been skimmed to raise the compression or anything.
is it possible to have bought a faulty guage?

any help would be appreciated, cheers

I had smokey engine syndrome - had the cylinder head stripped, ported and polished. Built it all up, and it still smoked! Had the bottom end done, which cured it and gave the engine a new lease of life (obviously!). The piston rings were completely gone!

but thats an expensive job, thinking of searching for a nice smoke grey GSi, low mileage, non smoker etc etc, and swap the TBs over

My rebuild cost me £1250- top job aswell. That included lightened flywheel aswell.

I think the only way to stop the problem is to sort your own engine out before doing any mods.

That's my opinion.

11:1 is 6 bar, cause you add one for the atomsphere, that's a spot on reading The most important thing is that they're the same. Also heat in the engine will cause the rpessure to be slightly raised.
I'd check if your breather is clogged first and see if the oil breather can vent ok, otherwise could cause the stem seals to have vapour forced out. Miles had this, he cleaned it out and was fine after.
