I've just started to modify cars, i got a 02 plate corsa c sxi and want to buy some alloys for it, but all these new things have comp to light, whats all this eta offset, and my dad just said something about the "j" of a wheel, and what do all the numbers mean in tyre sizes

Enkei Arashi Silver (17x7)
Tires: 215/45R17 (215/45R17)

These are what i'm looking at getting will they fit properly?

J is the width in inches.

For a Corsa C, aim to get the offset of the wheel between ET42 and ET49.

What offset are those above?

17x7:
17 inch diameter
7 inch (J) wide

Also look out for PCD which is basically the bolt pattern.
02 Corsa C's come with a 4x100 PCD:
4 stud holes
100 mm diameter on the pitch circle through the centre of the four stud holes.

I've emailed them and asked about the ET, just if i do get those wheels they will becoming from america, so i don't really want to get the sizing wrong. What sort of width do i want to be looking for? I would go measure mine, but it's cold dark and raining lol.

7J is normally the best you can hope for on a 17" wheel.

Not trying to put a downer on your choice of wheels... but what happens if you get them and one of them is damaged, but the box was sealed? (ie, from the factory)

205/40/17

205 = the width of the tyre
40 = profile or the aspect ratio (essentially the amount of tyre from the rim to the ground.
17 = diameter of the wheel they'll fit

40 profile is about the best on 17s for the Corsa as they won't throw the speedo out too much (expect slower 0-60 but faster top end speeds).

Road noise will be increased as will tramlining where the wheels pick up more of the road surface and tend to follow the lines followed by 1000's of HGVs.

Cornering should be a little sharper with decent tyres on a low profile.

Look for a tyre with a decent sidewall. Don't be afraid to spend as much or even more on your tyres than you do your wheels. Just because they don't look pretty, doesn't mean they're not important.
Without tyres gripping the road, you'll be in a ditch.

how much time are we talking on the 0-60? bearing in mind a corsa 1.2 does it in about 12 seconds which aint fast anway.

The website says 205/40R17 at $85 (£45) dollers each but not what make they are.

I think i know what to order now, thanks for the help i'll just hope everything goes smooth when i order them

If they're not stating what tyres then steer clear! Find out exactly what you'll be getting.

0-60 will be a second or so out. You will find the car's a little more sluggish.
You'll also be moving a lot more weight, which will increase your fuel consumption.

17s will be fine. Everything you do to the car will affect it in some way - it just depends how far you're willing to take it to sacrifice your own comfort or wallet.
As you've said, the 1.2's not exactly nippy anyway so it's no great loss to be even slower.

I'd personally not get 17s. I think they look too big for the car.

But where from James??? Where from?

Please get a price from Toby for a Mk3 Astra set of Highsports and see if he needs the old assemblies on exchange. There's a good lad.

The letter J is the bead profile, ie. the shape of the wheel where it meets the tyre. There are various different types, 4x4 vehicles usually use JJ, also there is K, JK, P, D few more.

You need to get tyres that match the wheels. The good news is that J is very very common and the others are very very rare.

He said if you act like a newbie people will slate you, but luckily Ian gave a proper response and explained the problem fully, which was nice.
