Engine sounds normal at idle on start up however after a drive sounds like a diesel and after turning off there is a tapping noise for 5 seconds.
Am I right in thinking the hydrolic cam lifters need replacing which is a common problem with 1.0 12v or completly wrong?

You getting good oil pressure?
The hydraulic lifters in theory will last for ages so long as they have a good oil supply, however if they get worn out they can start to make a rattling noise. This is something to put up with to be honest, because they cost a fortune to replace. They will also only make lots of noise while the engine is cold, after it warms up they will go quiet.
I think you are not getting enough oil in the head if it's sounding like a diesel...

Don't know whether its the same but on my 172 it was sounding really bad, turned out to be a faulty water pump the noise was comming from the bearings

i had this problem with my 1 litre, took it into vauxhall, and it is the cam belt tensioner and rollers, they have to replace this and also give a new cam belt, i thought at first it was the tappets, but trust me it is wat i said, horrible sound int it?
