Just had my bonnet resprayed and hes done an ace job and he has also mopped but in some places on the bonnet it looks a bit wierd hard to explain really but it looks more metalic than the wings etc, dont know if this is down to age or whatever, it also looks slightly lighter shade than the wing's, guy said this is because the paint he uses is water based and not solvent ?
Am i ok to polish the bonnet and wings etc tomorrow, and am i ok to wash it, its got loads of dust all over it from the rubbing compund they use with the mop.
Thanks Rob.

When was it done? if i was you, i would wait a week to polish it as the paint may still need to harden.

Paint can take a week or so to fully harden so id leave the polish for now. Silver is a very hard colour to match up and ive often noticed areas touched up looking too metalic as you described. Its very hard for paintshops to get a finish like they do in the factories.

depends how hes painted it (weather its in a booth or not) should be ok to wash and dry.
as for colour, if its a metalic he should of really blended the colour into the top of the wings to all matchs.
water base shouldent make a differance.
as at the end of the year everone has to change over to waterbase paint, and this would mean noone would ever get a colour match

Was defo painted in a booth, im just a bit confused hes done my bonnet twice now and the last time the colour match was perfect and that was changing the colour from red to silver not silver to silver.
Looks good now ive washed still is slightly more metalicy but i havent polished my car for about 2 months..

yes you will never get an exact match
Audi have 15 different shades of silver and ford have more
To make it look eright it will need to be blown into neighbouring panels ie wings. then it gives a visual effect of matching from the naked eye
You can get away with this on curnved surfaces a light reflects at different angles but on bonnet to wing its level thus there may be a difference
You will never get a perfect match and silver is one of the worst to do along with red as red fades

Think the best way to describe it is, if you look really closely it looks a bit patchy.

My mate did my back bumper for me, smoothed out the recess and the paint looked well out, 7days down the line it looks loads better but i'm not 110% happy.
The lip he smoothed looks ripply, plus he smoothed out the towing cover section..........i'm going to take it somewhere else............dont think he'll be happy but he should have done it right in the first place!
My mate said silver is the hardest colour to match, yeah i can fecking tell mate!

Did you polish it or anything mate like within the 7 days, the colour match is spot on now it seems, its just got too much metalic in it it seems and as i said its a bit patchy...
Would polishing help at all ?

I've tried mate, left it 6 days, then washed and polished it, but i'm only hitting the laquer.
Its miles better but not 110% so i'm going to get it booked in at the garage for the boot to be semi smoothed, plus get them to do the bumper as well.
Silver seems to show lumps and bumps easilly, plus if not sprayed right it can look really cloudy which is a bugger.
The bumper silver looks really really silver compared to my arces and the rest of the car that looks slightly grey when compared, is yours the same?

I think the cloudy affect is in the paint mate, polishing wont do sod all i dont think.
Its the joys of spraying silver! My front arches are slightly cloudy, been polished loads with no luck.
Paints not been layed on right or they've not quite used enough to give it a propper cover.

CUNTS! ill just have to leave it for now then i suppose, i aint paying for it to be re-done again !
It looks mint in the daylight and all show's are in daylight so thats alright, still want it perfect though thats the whole reason why i had it done

more than likely it will be because he hasnt apllied enough coats this causes it to be mottled or cloudy as you put it, looks ok in certain lights but in others looks crap, he more than likely didnt apply enough silver as you normally need to blend into an adjacent panel or panels, but you say all youve had done is your bonnet, so to keep the colour light you dont apply as many coats, or it could be that he has used waterbased instead of solvent based, which you have to dry inbetween coats, waterbased goes mottled very easily especially with silver, the best thing wuld have been to have the silver blended into the tops of the wings and have them laquered, sorry about the essay lol, hope it helps tho
