My mobo has on board sounds, but I need to run another sound card. I have fitted a PCI card, but when I install the drivers the computer blue screens and crashes on me.

Are you actually allowed to run 2 soundcards or does that confuse the computer too much...

The Mobo has 6 channel surround sound and the sound card is a £5 cheapo jobbie. I'm running WIndows XP Pro...

I was able to run two sound cards, can't even remember why i wanted to, but my OnBoard sound and Soundblaster audigy both worked.

Dunno why yours blue screens though, probably shared resources or something?

IRQ, DMA etc..etc.. ?

So any ideas on how to fix it? Would I need to change it's IRQ address or something? I know very little about this kind of thing...

I think the problem occurs when it tries to install a file called CMAUDIO.SYS which I presume is the driver...

erm an idea would be to turn off the onboard sound card in the bios and then install the new sound card this may sort your problem out hopefully.

Tried that, didn't work. I have my headphones working on a different channel on the on board sound. Not ideal because I don't have much control pver the volume as it's always going to be quieter as it's supposed to be a rear speaker...

I think the card I bought is goosed actually. Just my luck The wrapping it came in was already unwrapped and it's got writing on the box, should have known really

pop in your CD for the new sound card first.. run the installation to install the drivers.
Power down, slot in the new sound card (in a different slot to your previous attempts) and boot up.

shouldnt need to disable your current sound card.. although it makes no difference.
