I have a .com domain name and webspace.

How can I restrist the access to www.domainname.com/foldername/, so if someone types that URL in, it asks for a username/password, and if they are right, then it lets them in?

I don't want to make a PHP page or whatever, my mate has done it, but hasn't been online for a few days for me to ask him how he's done it
