Dad's Dell Dimension 8300 keeps getting this message every time you start it up. It has the options:
Stike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility.
Naturally, I just keep pressing F1, but what will happen if this doesn't get sorted, and what is the problem?
I've done a few searches on the internet, and it seems that a small, watch type battery on the motherboard is dead, which holds the CMOS data etc.
I take it the message which keeps appearing is simply warning that it's on its way out? Because the PC boots up fine, and isn't losing date/time settings etc.
Any help would be appreciated
I am pretty computer literate, can change parts etc easily, so wouldn't mind changing the battery myself. I just don't want to take the battery off, then realise all the motherboard settings have been lost, because Dad's PC is used for his work (I can obviously back-up before hand, but it saves a lot of hassle if dad can't use his PC etc).
Any help would be appreciated

I wouldnt expect the dell settings to have been altered from what they are as default to be honest so you shouldnt have a problem, will possibly just have to reset the clock in the bios.
