I think my gsi is burning oil. As the last two weekends ive had to top it up with about 300ml of oil (do about 200 miles a week) to bring it back to the normal level.
Cant see any leaks and if you accelerate hard through the rev range it is a little smokey at the top end, plus the exhaust is a little black around the tip.
What would be the most common cause of this (X16 engine btw)

Oil burning is not black.
It'll be greyish/blue smoke. Like a 2stroke engines exhaust smoke,lol.

Blacks(sooty) is overfueling.
Remove the spark plugs, if its burning oil the plugs will be covered in shiny/wet oil.
If there black, dry and "dusty" its ovefueling.
Altho if your oil levels going down, and its not leaking, it is burning it. Could be rings, stem seals, headgasket.

Leave it overnight, then get someone to stand by the exhaust tailpipe when you next start it.
Stem seals usually gives blue smoke right on startup(as oil seeps through the seals with the engine sitting...) then gets burned as soon as your start it.

If its a c16xe, according to the owners manual they can use up to 1 litre of oil per 1000 miles!
