Best thing is to disable all of the uneeded services (google) and programs on startup.
Start > Run > type msconfig, and you'll be able to disable programs that start upon startup, stuff like realplayer/quicktime/messenger, things that you don't really need when the computer starts up etc.
Theres plenty of stuff around on the net about this, so just google (disable services, startup etc etc)
other than that, you can switch off themes, close programs you don't need running, run memory maximizers (something like that) - which will flush the ram every so often (not the best way to go about it). But i would buy some more ram if you can, would be the easiest and probably the best solution to the problem.
But until you hear it skip i wouldn't worry about it - and im sure under the preferences you can increase the buffer size.

open computer up, take an old one out (its as simple as pulling out a small board off the mobo), find what it is and purchase a similar model (ask on here) and then open the new stuff and place it in along with the old stuff.
Job done.

I think you can (my Dad got a laptop from there and they upgraded the RAM there so had some knocking about!).
Your best getting it online though TBH for good prices.
